Paris (dpa) – At the Stade de France in Paris, long jump world record holder Markus Rehm has scooped his fifth gold medal at the Paralympics. An orthopaedic technician, he lived up to his role as favourite and won his fifth Paralympic gold medal with a jump of 8.13 metres. Rehm, who had carried the Paralympic torch through Paris on the opening night, also increased the number of gold medals to six for the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS). Previously, the 36-year-old athlete, who at the age of 14 had lost his right leg below the knee after a wakeboarding accident, had set a world record of 8.72 metres in 2023. Picking up the first German gold in athletics, Rehm brought the day – which saw Germany celebrate a total of seven medals – to the perfect conclusion. The Paralympic cyclists led by gold medal winner Maike Hausberger and the equestrian dressage riders in particular improved the DBS scoresheet considerably.
