UPDATE: Chattanooga firefighters spent hours trying to put out a fire that ultimately destroyed a home in Hixson on Thursday.

CFD crews were called to the home on Patriot Lane in the Big Ridge community at around 4:30am.

The fire started in the backyard, and quickly spread, consuming the decks and eventually reaching the house.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames at bay for most of the morning, but unsafe conditions led to major issues.

As the structural integrity of the home waned, crews on the frontline fighting the fire were forced to pull back.

The home ended up collapsing, resulting in a total loss.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes, but some properties were damaged by the heat.

The homeowner and his pets were able to make it out of the home unharmed.

    No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews were called around 4:30am to the 1700 block of Patriot Lane in the Colonial Shores subdivision over a fire in a backyard that was moving towards a home.

The flames spread beneath decks at the home and crews have been working to keep them from reaching the actual house.

CFD officials say the response has been a challenge due to the terrain of the backyard.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
