HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Memorial services will be held for the late Twinkle Borge in Leeward Oahu this Sunday.
It’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Puuhonua O Waianae Farm Village. The program will begin at 11 a.m.
Government leaders who have worked with Borge over the years will be in attendance including Gov. Josh Green, former Gov. David Ige and Honolulu City Councilwoman Andria Tupola.
Gov. Green is expected to present a proclamation designating Sept. 15 as a “Day of Aloha” in her honor.
Tupola is also expected to present Borge’s family with a Certificate in Memoriam from the City and County of Honolulu.
Fondly known as “Auntie Twinkle” or “Mama” to many, she ran the homeless village “Puuhonua O Waianae” in Leeward Oahu.
She passed away in August at the age of 54.
As Hokulea’s crew sailed out of Pokai Bay on Friday, they honored Borge with an oli, pu and flower drop. On the back of the vessel, a lei hulu in Borge’s favorite color, pink, was flown with the Hawaiian flag.
“The lei hulu we usually fly on the top of the canoes when we can’t find stars, so we use that to guide us for the wind in rough situations to cause you to look up,” explained Kaina Holomalia, captain of the Hokulea.
“So, a lot of us right now we’re hurting, but flying her lei hulu, looking up at it causing us to look up and keep your head up.”
In honor of Borge, the governor has also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday through the weekend.
