Though it already has a loss to its name, LSU’s hopes of making the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff remain very much alive.
The No. 17 Tigers simply need to prove their worthiness over the next several months in SEC play, with a conference title granting them an automatic berth into the field and a sufficiently impressive resume getting them an at-large spot.
The work to achieve that easier-said-than-done goal begins Saturday, when coach Brian Kelly and his team travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on South Carolina in LSU’s 2024 SEC opener.

The game will get some added exposure, with ESPN’s “College GameDay” on location in Columbia in advance of the matchup.
The Tigers rebounded from a disappointing season-opening loss to USC (that school everyone outside of South Carolina refers to as USC, that is) and knocked off Nicholls 44-21 for their first win of the young season. Garrett Nussmeier threw for a career-high six touchdowns in the win and recorded his third-consecutive game with at least 300 passing yards, a streak dating back to last season’s ReliaQuest Bowl win against Wisconsin.
They’ll look to get over .500 against Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks, who came back from an uncomfortably close Week 1 win against Old Dominion to blow out Kentucky 31-6 on the road last Saturday in the first SEC game of the season for both programs. South Carolina held the Wildcats to just 183 total yards and 2.9 yards per play.

Cory Diaz, Daily Advertiser: South Carolina 18, LSU 15
“ESPN bringing “College GameDay” to Columbia for this game was worst-case scenario for LSU. An already passionate fan base gets up even more thanks to the external fervor and the Tigers struggle get anything going. Gamecocks win on a late field goal to send the crowd inside Williams-Brice Stadium over the edge.“
Bill Bender, The Sporting News: LSU 28, South Carolina 24
“South Carolina is getting the ESPN “College GameDay” treatment, and they will need to get the ground game going behind LaNorris Sellers in order to keep pace with LSU. Garrett Nussmeier had some misses in the season-opening loss to USC, but his overall numbers are amazing, having completed 75 percent of his passes for with eight TDs and just one interception. South Carolina has talent deficiencies in many areas, but one bright spot is freshman edge rusher, Dylan Stewart, a five-star freshman who already has 2.5 sacks.”
Lulu Kesin, Greenville News: South Carolina 20, LSU 17
“Will South Carolina rise to the occasion or will LSU continue its dominance? Signs point to this being the Gamecocks’ year.“
