PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The history of the Glenwood Business District is now being honored with historical markers.

Five businesses and a church were recognized at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

Some of the businesses are still standing, while others are no longer in operation but had a significant impact on the development of the Glenwood community.

Each marker provided a brief description of the business and its contribution to shaping Glenwood into the community it is today.

“Our children, our grandchildren, our great-grandchildren need to understand that there were that were owned in the black community,” said Anita Dillard, a member of the committee tasked with choosing places for the historical markers.

Those who accepted markers said that the event helped instill their family’s legacies.

“There is a strong legacy Wilson and bond here, that building still stands. We will never sell that property,” said Tyra Wilson, an honoree there to represent Wilson Bros. Barber Shop.

After the ceremony was completed, members of the Parks, Culture, and Recreation Department at Panama City transported the markers to their new homes.
