Secondary accomplishments
Victoria “Tori” Palys has been named Lebanon High School’s September Student of the Month. Palys serves on the student council, plays lacrosse and volunteers for multiple school clubs, according to a new release from the Lebanon School District. She has also managed the girls’ basketball team and has been a member of the cheer squad. In addition to her numerous activities, Palys also works.
“Tori has taken on new challenges each year and continues to grow as a learner and a leader,” according to the release. “Tori is a reliable, positive, determined member of our community who is an excellent role model for our younger students.”
The following Hanover High School students were named semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program: Amara Fuchs, Diego Lee, Krrish Mishra, Isaac Novosad, Rachel Rockmore, Elizabeth Staats, Owen Welch, and Emilia Williams.
The following Lebanon High School students were named semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program: Nicholas Bourne, Nina Ellingson and Shaashwat Halwawala.
Thetford Academy students Andre Whiteberg and Oliver Yukica were named semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Olivia Daigle, of Hartford High School, was named semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Post-secondary graduations
Ethan Ross, of Hanover, earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., this year.
Ian McIntosh, of Hartland, and Zeda Wolf, of Plainfield, graduated from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., this spring.
Jenny Tuthill, of West Hartford, earned a certificate in diagnostic medical sonography from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, this summer.
The following Upper Valley residents earned bachelor’s degrees from Keene State University this spring: Cassady Putnam, Canaan; Madison Martell, Charlestown; Samuel Larareo, Claremont; Molly McNulty, Claremont; Anne Richards, Newport; Alexandra Richardson, Newport; Jaeda Rochford Hague, Newport; Sienna Carter, Orford; and Jackson Kulacz, Springfield, N.H.
Jordan Dawson, of Canaan, earned a master’s degree from Keene State College this spring.
Post-secondary accomplishments
James Townsend, of Corinth, made the president’s list at the Community College of Vermont for the summer 2024 semester.
The following Upper Valley residents made the dean’s list at the Community College of Vermont for the summer 2024 semester: Iris Johnson, Bradford, Vt.; Jeremy Goodridge, Corinth; Tamara Hernandez, Grantham; Paul McAree, Hartland; Bradnee Deaguiar, South Royalton; Toni French, South Royalton; Lucas Zarr, South Royalton; Amanda Clark, Vershire; Cheryl Howe, Vershire; Aura Anthony, White River Junction; Kaelyn Courtemanche, White River Junction; Jessica Giffin, White River Junction; and Eterei Fanolua, Windsor.
Reilly Loughman, of Norwich, earned a 2023 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Scholars of Distinction recognition and was one of 10 Hamilton College, in Clinton, N.Y., players named to the 2023 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.
Grants
Seven Upper Valley schools were among 31 schools to earn “Science of Reading” literacy grants from the New Hampshire Department of Education.
“These grants will place high-quality, evidence-based materials directly into the hands of students across New Hampshire,” Kathleen McCaffery, reading and writing specialist for NHED’s Division of Learner Support, said in a news release. “With these resources, teachers can apply research-backed practices, enabling them to tailor instruction more effectively to address the unique reading needs of every student.”
The following Upper Valley elementary schools earned part of the $652,500 in funding: Canaan Elementary School ($6,719.91), Enfield Village School ($15,410), Grantham Village School ($25,196), Hanover Street School in Lebanon ($22,129.34), Mt. Lebanon School in Lebanon ($12,999.56), Plainfield Elementary School ($40,689.98) and Woodsville Elementary School ($827).
