The Dodge Charger, while overshadowed by its sibling the Challenger, continued to evolve and improve throughout its production run. Despite the initial fanfare for the Challenger, Dodge remained dedicated to the Charger, producing nearly 50,000 units with a strong emphasis on V8 power.

While most Chargers rolled off the assembly line with V8 engines, a limited number of 300 were equipped with six cylinder units. The Charger and Charger 500 offered a 225ci six-cylinder base engine, but the real power came from the V8 options.

The 381ci V8, rated at 230 horsepower, was the base V8 choice. Dodge also offered more powerful engines, including the iconic 426 Hemi with 425 horsepower and the 440 R/T producing 375 horsepower. Due to its high price, the Hemi was a rarity, with only 112 units sold.

The Charger featured in these photos originally came equipped with a 440ci V8 engine, which remains in the car today. The seller, scotto58, states that the Charger is largely original, although it has undergone a repaint in the 1970s and now rides on aftermarket wheels. The original wheels are still available.

Additionally, the Charger’s interior was known for its comfort and spaciousness, making it a popular choice for families and individuals who valued both performance and practicality. The car’s styling was also distinctive, with its bold lines and muscular stance setting it apart from other muscle cars of its era. While the Challenger may have stolen the spotlight initially, the Charger proved to be a worthy contender, offering a unique blend of power, luxury, and style.

This time capsule of automotive history has remained in excellent condition due to its long-term storage in the arid climate of Wyoming. With just 57,000 original miles on the clock, this Charger is a testament to its owner’s dedication to preservation. Despite its lengthy hibernation, the car’s engine has been recently refreshed and runs smoothly. The owner reports having driven it for a few hundred miles to ensure its roadworthiness.

However, potential buyers are advised to conduct a thorough inspection, including a lift inspection to assess the undercarriage, engine condition, and originality. This Charger’s pristine state and R/T designation make it a highly desirable collector’s item.

The upcoming auction, without a reserve, offers interested parties the opportunity to acquire this unique piece of automotive history. Its original paint, interior, and mechanical components are all in remarkably good condition, reflecting the care and attention it has received over the years.

Given its rarity and condition, this Charger is expected to attract significant interest from collectors and enthusiasts. The auction will be held in Grand Junction, Colorado, and will be available for inspection before the sale.
