Law enforcement officials stated Sunday, Sept. 15, that U.S. Secret Service agents stopped an assassination attempt on Donald Trump at his Trump International Golf Club near West Palm Beach.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., on Sunday a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel poking through the bushes at the golf course. The agent fired shots. The would-be assailant did not fire a shot, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told Fox News on Monday morning. As shots were fired, Trump was on the fifth or sixth hole, estimated to have been within 500 yards of the potential shooter.
The man then fled, officials said, leaving behind an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks and a GoPro video camera. Bradshaw said a witness then came forward saying he saw someone flee from the bushes and get into a black Nissan vehicle. The witness apparently took a photo of the car and license plate. Bradshaw said their “real time” crime center, which monitors government cameras on roads across the county, put the information out to license-plate readers and they identified the car traveling north on Interstate 95 toward Martin County.
Martin County Sheriff’s officials on Monday provided a photo, video and information about detaining the man deputies stopped Sunday on I-95 in connection with what the FBI said was an apparent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
The man was widely identified as Ryan Routh, 58. Public records indicate a man of that age named Ryan Routh lived in Hawaii, but voting records showed the same man as a longtime voter in North Carolina.
