Google announced today a new agreement with carbon removal company Mombak for the purchase of 50,000 carbon credits generated through Mombak’s reforestation projects in the Brazilian Amazon.

The agreement marks Google’s first-ever purchase of nature-based carbon credits, and follows a commitment announced in March by the company to contract for at least $35 million of carbon removal credits over the next 12 months, and the announcement by the company earlier this month of another deal for 100,000 tons of Direct Air Capture-based credits at a landmark $100/ton price.

Google also recently formed part of the launch of the Symbiosis Coalition, alongside tech giant peers Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce, a new advance market commitment (AMC) collaboration aimed at supporting the development and growth of the nature-based carbon removal market, and with a collective commitment to contract up to 20 million tons of nature-based carbon removal credits.

Randy Spock, Google’s Carbon Removal Lead, said:

“We’re pleased to partner with Mombak on our first purchase of forestry-based carbon removal credits, with an eye to solving a central challenge of this field: ensuring certainty of climate impact. Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on this deal via our participation in the Symbiosis Coalition.”

Founded in 2021, Mombak is focused on large-scale carbon removal projects, starting with native, biodiverse reforestation of the Amazon rainforest. The company’s solution targets capturing carbon through large-scale reforestation of degraded, unproductive pastureland with native tree species and assisted natural regeneration, with co-benefits including reversing biodiversity loss, improving watershed assets and generating employment and social impact in local communities. Mombak recently signed one of the largest-ever nature-based carbon removal offtake agreements with Microsoft.

In a post announcing the new agreement, Mombak CTO Dan Harburg said:

“As we scale our operations, this collaboration with Google is a major milestone in our mission to become the world’s largest and most impactful carbon removal project developer. We look forward to working with Google and other leading organizations to further develop the field of nature-based carbon removal, ensuring that our projects continue to meet the highest standards for climate impact, transparency, and community engagement.”
