2024 Chevrolet Trax Faces Challenges in Meeting IIHS Safety Standards Despite Comprehensive Redesign

The 2024 Chevrolet Trax, despite a comprehensive redesign, has faced challenges in meeting the IIHS’s updated safety standards. The IIHS’s stringent moderate overlap front crash test, introduced in 2022, reflects the increased weight of modern vehicles and the higher risk of injuries for second row occupants, particularly children and small women. The Trax’s performance in this test was deemed poor, with dummies indicating potential chest and head/neck injuries for rear occupants.

While it performed acceptably in the side impact test, with some torso and head/pelvis injuries, it excelled in the small overlap front and original moderate overlap front crash tests. However, its headlight and pedestrian crash prevention systems were rated marginally, and its seatbelt reminder and LATCH system were only acceptable.

The Trax’s mixed results highlight the ongoing challenge of balancing vehicle design with safety standards that are constantly evolving to address emerging risks. While the Trax’s strengths in certain crash tests are commendable, its shortcomings in others underscore the need for continued improvements in vehicle safety technology.

The Chevrolet Trax, a recent update to the subcompact SUV market, aims to compete with rivals like the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30, and Subaru Crosstrek. Built on GM’s Vehicle Set Strategy Front platform, the 2024-and-newer Trax offers a choice of engines: a 1.2-liter turbo inline three and a China-specific 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder. Only the 1.2-liter option is available in the US, paired with a six-speed torque-converter automatic. The Trax starts at $20,400 for the base LS trim.

While the Trax offers various configurations, including the 1RS, LT, ACTIV, and 2RS, all-wheel drive is not an option, which may disappoint potential buyers. The 1.2-liter turbo engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, is not particularly impressive. In terms of safety, the Trax’s competitors have generally outperformed it in crash tests. The Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, and Hyundai Kona stand out with green ratings across the board for crashworthiness.

However, the Trax does offer some advantages, such as its spacious interior and comfortable ride. The base LS trim comes standard with features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and higher trims offer additional amenities like a sunroof, heated seats, and a premium sound system. The Trax’s styling is also more modern and appealing than some of its competitors.

The Chevrolet Trax is a competitive option in the subcompact SUV segment. While it may not be the best choice for those seeking all-wheel drive or a powerful engine, it offers a good balance of features, comfort, and value.
