The Mazda EZ-6, a China exclusive electric sedan closely related to the Deepal SL03 liftback, is poised to make its European debut this fall with minimal design changes. However, the high import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries in the United States and Europe make it unlikely that the EZ-6 will be exported to these markets.
While the Chinese version of the EZ-6 offers a range extender option with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four gas engine, the prototype spotted testing in Germany is equipped with a purely electric powertrain.
Despite its impressive 170 km/h top speed, the EZ-6’s braking system appears to be undersized for its weight, especially considering the lightest battery-electric version weighs a substantial 1,855 kilograms.
Furthermore, the EZ-6’s European debut raises questions about its long-term viability in a market that is becoming increasingly competitive. While the EZ-6 offers a compelling combination of style, efficiency, and performance, it will need to differentiate itself from other electric vehicles to succeed.
The Mazda EZ-6, a global product initially launched in China and Europe, offers two powertrain options: a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Both models utilize lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are slightly more cost-effective than other battery chemistries. While this lower cost per kilowatt-hour could provide a competitive advantage, the impending 35.3% tariff will likely increase the price in Europe.
The BEV version delivers 255 horsepower, while the EREV’s rear electric motor generates 215 horsepower. The BEV boasts a CLTC range estimate of 600 kilometers (373 miles), while the EREV could exceed 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) before requiring a gas station stop. Although impressive, these range figures should be considered cautiously as the CLTC testing standard is more optimistic than the WLTP used in Europe.
In addition to its powertrain options, the EZ-6 offers a spacious interior and a modern design. While it is slightly shorter than the Volkswagen ID.7, it still provides ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. The EZ-6’s liftback design allows for easy access to the cargo area, which is comparable in size to other mid-size sedans.
