The Plymouth GTX, once a pinnacle of muscle car performance, saw its reign cut short in 1971 due to tightening emissions regulations. While the GTX badge persisted for a few more years, its luster had faded as drivers sought more fuel-efficient options. By 1974, only a handful of these high-performance Road Runners were produced, making them a rare find for enthusiasts today.

This particular example, though not a numbers-matching survivor, retains its original paint and offers a look into the waning days of the muscle car era. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of these classic vehicles, even as their performance capabilities diminished. While the GTX may not have the same raw power as its earlier iterations, it still carries a certain mystique and nostalgia that resonates with car enthusiasts.

The rarity of these 1974 GTX models, combined with their unique history, makes them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Finding one in such original condition is a testament to the care and attention that the previous owners have given it. It’s a reminder of a time when cars were more than just transportation; they were symbols of power, freedom, and American ingenuity.

Despite its age, the GTX still boasts factory features like bucket seats, air conditioning, a console, and an AM/FM radio. However, it’s not without its flaws. Rust has crept into the lower body panels and surface rust is evident in exposed areas. The interior, while showing wear, remains largely intact.

The car is currently being auctioned with no reserve and has already reached $7,800. Given its rarity and potential for restoration, this GTX offers a unique opportunity for Mopar enthusiasts.

The Dark Moonstone Metallic color, identified by code KL8, is particularly rare within the Mopar community. While specific production numbers are elusive, only a small quantity of GTXs were likely painted in this color.

This exclusivity adds to the car’s desirability and potential value. Restoring this GTX would be a significant undertaking, requiring both time and financial investment. However, the rewards could be substantial.

A fully restored Road Runner GTX, especially one in a rare color like Dark Moonstone Metallic, can command a premium price in the collector car market. For those seeking a classic Mopar with a rich history and the potential for significant appreciation, this GTX presents an intriguing opportunity.
