Ford’s BlueCruise 1.4 Update Brings Better Support For Hands-Free Driving

Ford has not yet confirmed whether all models currently equipped with earlier versions of BlueCruise will be eligible for the upcoming 1.4 software update.

A company spokesperson informed that Ford will provide details on the models eligible for BlueCruise 1.4 at a future date.

Hands-free driving can be a lifesaver when stuck in a traffic jam during your commute or when cruising down highways on long trips to visit family.

However, these moments of relaxation are often disrupted when systems like Ford’s BlueCruise require the driver to regain control.

Ford aims to reduce these interruptions with the introduction of its latest hands-free system, BlueCruise 1.4.

Ford claims that the updated BlueCruise will allow the hands-free mode to remain active five times longer than its predecessor, version 1.2.

The new software will also improve vehicle stability within its lane, thanks to a new motion controller that works with the steering to reduce the “ping-pong” effect—where the vehicle bounces between lane markers.

Another enhancement includes smoother cornering, with the vehicle adjusting its speed more naturally through turns.

As with BlueCruise 1.3, the new version still allows the vehicle to change lanes autonomously, but the driver must activate the turn signal to initiate the maneuver.

This differs from GM’s Super Cruise, which automatically changes lanes when executing passing maneuvers.

It’s important to note that both Ford’s BlueCruise and GM’s Super Cruise are classified as SAE Level 2 systems, meaning drivers are still required to remain attentive and be ready to take control if needed.

BlueCruise 1.4 is currently available as a factory option on the 2025 Ford F-150 and the redesigned Lincoln Navigator. Ford plans to extend the availability of this update to other new Ford and Lincoln models in the coming months.

Additionally, a spokesperson confirmed that models with older versions of BlueCruise will be able to receive the 1.4 update via a software upgrade, although the list of specific eligible models will be announced at a later date.
