The Volkswagen Polo, a beloved subcompact hatchback with a 40-year history, has fallen victim to the growing popularity of electric crossovers. In a move that marks the end of an era, the automaker ceased production of the Polo in Europe this July, with the final model rolling off the assembly line in Pamplona, Spain. This decision was primarily driven by declining sales figures, as consumers increasingly opted for more versatile and spacious electric vehicles.

Despite its enduring popularity and significance to the Volkswagen brand, the Polo struggled to compete in the European market against the surge of electric crossovers. While the model remained a top seller in certain regions, it ultimately couldn’t match the demand for more modern and environmentally friendly alternatives.

The Polo’s production in Europe may have come to an end, but its legacy will live on. The model’s long running success and cultural impact have solidified its place in automotive history.

Additionally, Volkswagen will continue to manufacture the Polo for the European market at its Kariega factory in South Africa, ensuring that the iconic hatchback remains accessible to those who appreciate its timeless design and reliable performance.

Volkswagen is set to shift its production in Pamplona, Spain, towards electric vehicles. While the T-Cross and Taigo will continue to be assembled there for a time, the factory will eventually transition to producing two brand new small electric crossovers.

These vehicles, built on the MEB platform, are slated to begin production in 2026. One will be branded as a Volkswagen and the other as a Skoda. The Volkswagen model is expected to be the ID2all, positioned below the ID.3 in the lineup.

The Skoda model, known as the Epiq, may also have a hatchback version produced in Martorell, Spain. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Polo, now in its sixth generation, continues to be available with a starting price of €19,835 in Germany.

Powered by a 79 hp 1.0L gasoline engine, it offers a generous amount of standard features. The GTI hot hatch, priced at €35,450, boasts a 2.0L engine and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 6.5 seconds.
