Incat Tasmania’s groundbreaking electric ferry, Hull 096, is set to redefine the future of sustainable maritime transportation. This innovative vessel, the largest of its kind world, is currently under construction and is expected to be fully operational by the end of next year.

Commissioned by Buquebus, an Argentinian ferry operator, the electric ferry will revolutionize passenger travel between Argentina and Uruguay with its impressive speed, capacity, and significantly reduced emissions. Boasting a length of 130 meters and a width of 32 meters, Hull 096 will be capable of carrying over 2000 passengers and 225 vehicles.

Its spacious duty-free shopping deck, spanning over 2,300 square meters, will offer a luxurious experience for travelers. The ferry’s electric propulsion system, powered by renewable energy sources, will not only reduce its environmental impact but also provide a quiet and comfortable journey for passengers.

With a cruising speed of over 40 knots, Hull 096 will offer faster travel times between Argentina and Uruguay, making it a more convenient option for commuters and tourists alike. Its sustainable design and advanced technology demonstrate Incat Tasmania’s commitment to creating a greener and more efficient future for the maritime industry.

A groundbreaking electric ferry is taking shape in Argentina. With Wartsila’s cutting-edge technology at its core, this innovative vessel is set to redefine the future of maritime transportation. The ferry, a lightweight catamaran, will be powered entirely by electricity, with eight powerful waterjets ensuring efficient propulsion. This ambitious project marks a significant step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping.

The ferry’s battery system, supplied by Wartsila, is designed to deliver four times the power of any existing electric or hybrid ship. This unprecedented capacity will enable the vessel to operate on long distance routes, making it a practical and efficient choice for commercial and passenger transportation.

As the project progresses, Incat, the shipyard responsible for the ferry’s construction, is considering expanding its facilities to accommodate a growing demand for electric vessels. This trend towards electric propulsion is driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impact of traditional maritime transportation.

With the hull now complete, the focus will shift to the internal fit out, including the passenger amenities and shopping deck. Wartsila is scheduled to deliver the complete battery package and waterjets later this year. By the end of 2025, this pioneering all electric ferry of unprecedented proportions should be ready to enter service in South America.
