The Dodge Charger, initially a luxurious four seater fastback, transformed into a classic muscle car in 1968. However, as the muscle car era waned, the Charger underwent a significant redesign in 1971, featuring “fuselage” sheet metal. This generation continued production until 1974.

Despite the nameplate persisting until 1978, the third generation is widely considered the last true performance oriented version, primarily due to its availability with the legendary 426 cubic inch HEMI and high compression 440 cubic inch RB engines.

These powerful engines, coupled with the Charger’s aggressive styling and muscular proportions, made it a formidable force on the streets and racetracks. Unfortunately, the introduction of stricter emissions regulations in 1972 led to the discontinuation of these iconic power plants. As a result, the performance capabilities of the Charger were significantly diminished.

While later models continued to be produced, they lacked the raw power and visceral excitement of their earlier counterparts. This green-on-green hardtop, produced shortly after this pivotal moment, represents the last opportunity to own a Charger equipped with these legendary engines.

The 1972 Dodge Charger, despite losing some of its iconic features, actually gained popularity over its predecessor. With a 29% increase in sales, Dodge sold a total of 75,594 units that year. One such example, a green on green Charger, has recently undergone a complete restoration and is now on display.

The car’s exterior has been refinished in the original F3 Fiesta Green Poly, resulting in a stunning and eye-catching finish. The interior, also in green, complements the exterior beautifully and adds to the appeal of the car. The Charger was originally equipped with a range of desirable options, including air conditioning, power disc brakes, power steering, AM/FM radio, bucket seats, and a center console.

All of these features are still present in this particular example and are in excellent working condition. Under the hood, the Charger is powered by a four barrel 400 V8 engine, which was the second most powerful option available for the 1972 model year.

This engine produces 255 horsepower and is mated to a three speed automatic transmission. The Charger is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in less than eight seconds and can complete the quarter mile in under 18 seconds.
