Renault’s upcoming 4 E-Tech is poised to reimagine the iconic R4 model. This compact crossover, slightly larger than its hatchback bodied sibling, the 5 E-Tech, was recently spied testing in Spain. The camouflaged prototypes offer the look of a twin screen dash layout, reminiscent of the original R4’s distinctive design.
Features like roof mounted rails, circular daytime running lights, and rectangular taillights suggest that the 4 E-Tech will maintain the essence of the beloved classic while incorporating modern elements. The exterior lighting system, in particular, pays homage to the commercially successful R4 that Renault produced from 1961 to 1992.
The R4, which continued production in Slovenia until 1994, achieved immense popularity and garnered the nickname “Katrca” from the French “quatre.” Its R4L variant, known as “Quatrelle” in French, further contributed to its legacy. Together with the discontinued R3, the original Renault 4 surpassed 8.1 million units sold over its 33 year production run.
