The Chevrolet Nova, introduced in 1962, was a belated response to the growing compact car market. Initially powered by an inline-six engine, the Nova received its first V8 option in 1964. This V8, a 283 cubic inch engine, marked the beginning of the Nova’s transformation into a muscle car. In 1968, the Super Sport trim became a performance package, featuring a powerful 295 horsepower V8. However, Chevy didn’t stop there.

The Nova also received the 396 cubic inch big block V8, capable of producing up to 375 horsepower. This engine put the Nova SS on par with iconic muscle cars like the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet. The Nova SS 396 remained available until 1970, but stricter emissions regulations in the early 1970s led to a decline in performance.

Today, the Nova SS 396 is a highly sought-after collectible, with pristine examples commanding prices well over $100,000. For those seeking a more understated muscle car, this 1970 Nova offers a sleeper style performance that will leave you questioning the need for “SS” badges and factory big block engines.

Sporting a humble hue of green, steel wheels, and a lack of “SS” emblems, it might seem like an ordinary grandma’s car. However, this sleeper packs a powerful punch. Its custom-built 565 cubic inch V8, equipped with high performance components sourced from renowned brands like Mahle, Brodix, Holley, and Edelbrock, delivers an astonishing output of over 750 horsepower.

This immense power is channeled to the rear wheels through a custom-built TH400 gearbox and a 12 bolt rear end. Despite its unassuming appearance, this Nova is a force to be reckoned with, capable of outperforming even classic muscle cars like HEMI powered Mopars and LS6 powered Chevelles.

The interior of the Nova maintains a simple aesthetic, with minimal modifications. While the car has undergone a rotisserie restoration, the paintwork is mostly original, adding to its unique character.

The low mileage and the custom built drivetrain make this Nova a hidden gem for those seeking a powerful and understated classic. Imagine cruising down the highway in this seemingly ordinary car, only to unleash its true potential with a simple press of the accelerator.

The surprise and awe on the faces of onlookers as this unassuming sedan roars to life is a sight to behold. This Nova is a testament to the power of customization and the enduring appeal of classic American muscle cars.
