The Durban Metro Police Service, South Africa’s third largest city, has added 50 Volkswagen Golf GTIs to its fleet. These high performance hatchbacks join Isuzu and Ford pickup trucks to enhance response capabilities and community service.
The eighth generation Golf GTI’s efficient EA888 turbo engine delivers 241 horsepower and 273 pound feet of torque. Its DSG transmission sends power to the front wheels, providing a thrilling driving experience.
While the pre-facelift Mk8 starts at $47,395, the 2024 model is priced at $31,965 in the US. The Mk8.5 upgrade increased power to 261 horsepower but eliminated manual transmissions, a feature that many enthusiasts miss. Despite this, the Golf GTI remains a popular choice for those seeking a balance of performance and practicality.
The Golf GTI’s addition to the Durban Metro Police Service fleet is a testament to its versatility and capabilities. Its powerful engine, advanced technology, and stylish design make it an ideal choice for law enforcement and emergency services.
With its combination of speed, agility, and comfort, the Golf GTI is sure to be a valuable asset to the city’s police force. The Isuzu D-Max, available in both single cab and double cab configurations, starts at around 21,395 USD.
Ford’s Ranger, also offered in multiple body styles, begins at 29,920 USD. Both vehicles are manufactured locally, with Isuzu having a plant in Port Elizabeth and Ford operating in Pretoria.
While the D-Max offers a choice of 1.9 liter and 3.0 liter diesel engines, the Ranger is equipped with a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel or a 3.0 liter EcoBoost petrol engine. The Ranger Raptor, the most expensive model in the lineup, is priced at 71,255 USD.
Despite the high cost of some of these vehicles, the Durban Metro Police Service has defended its purchase of a fleet of GTIs, stating that they are strictly for official use and not for personal purposes.
