Lexus is significantly updating its flagship SUV, the LX, for the 2025 model year, introducing both a hybrid powertrain and a new off-road-oriented trim. The LX700h marks the brand’s first hybrid variant in this lineup, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine with an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery.
This system increases the SUV’s power and torque compared to the standard LX600, while slightly improving fuel efficiency. Additionally, Lexus is launching the Overtrail trim, packed with off-roading equipment and designed to take the LX’s off-road capabilities to new heights. This trim will only be available with the LX700h hybrid system.
The LX700h hybrid system introduces advanced technology, incorporating both an alternator and a starter, which allows the engine to start even if the hybrid system is non-operational. This setup boosts output to 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, a notable improvement over the LX600’s 409 horsepower.
Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the hybrid also enhances fuel economy slightly, reaching an EPA-estimated 20 mpg. The hybrid system’s ability to operate in low-speed, electric-only mode in off-road situations makes it a versatile choice for drivers who require precise throttle control in rugged terrain.
To handle the added weight of the hybrid components, Lexus has reinforced the LX700h with a new three-cross frame and repositioned the spare tire to maintain its off-road capability. The battery is placed under the cargo floor in two-row models and under the third row in the seven-seat versions. These engineering adjustments ensure the LX700h retains its high-performance abilities both on- and off-road while integrating hybrid technology seamlessly.
The Overtrail trim stands out as an off-road specialist, equipped with front and rear locking differentials, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, and protective features like a front skid plate. Lexus has also equipped it with a 2400-watt AC inverter for outdoor utility.
Visually, the Overtrail distinguishes itself with matte gray and dark chrome exterior elements, black wheel arches, and a unique Earth-tone paint option. Inside, the trim features either black or Stone Brown leather, along with black open-pore wood accents, creating a rugged yet refined interior.
In addition to the hybrid and Overtrail updates, the entire 2025 LX lineup benefits from several new features. Active height control, adaptive suspension, and Lexus’s Safety System+ 3.0 come standard across all trims. Additional luxury touches include USB-C ports, a head-up display, and available features like a center console cooler and massage seats on higher trims.
The LX600 remains mechanically unchanged for 2025, with both the LX600 and LX700h rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds. Pricing for the updated models will be announced closer to launch, with the LX700h expected to be priced higher than the LX600.
