Despite centuries of maritime transportation, innovation in sea vehicles has been slow. The Seaglider, a hybrid seaplane and boat, offers a promising solution. Combining ground effect and hydrofoils, it can travel at high speeds and distances. Powered by electricity, the Seaglider has the potential to revolutionize sea travel.

The Seaglider’s unique design allows it to hover above the water, reducing drag and increasing efficiency. This enables it to achieve speeds of up to 180 mph, significantly faster than traditional boats. Additionally, its ability to travel both on and above the water makes it versatile for various applications, including passenger transport, cargo delivery, and search and rescue missions.

The Seaglider is also environmentally friendly, as it is powered by electricity and produces zero emissions. This makes it a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-powered boats, which contribute to pollution and climate change. Furthermore, its electric propulsion system is quieter than traditional engines, reducing noise pollution and improving the user experience.

As the Seaglider continues to be developed, it is expected to have a significant impact on maritime transportation. Its speed, efficiency, and environmental benefits make it a promising solution for the future of sea travel. Regent, the company behind the Viceroy Seaglider, is gearing up for its final tests before the revolutionary watercraft takes to the skies.

With over 600 orders already placed, valued at over $9 billion, the anticipation for this world first product is palpable. The upcoming tests, conducted in the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound, will see the Viceroy floating on its hull, both at the dock and in speed restricted waterways.

The hydrofoils will then be deployed, allowing the Seaglider to fly over open water. These trials, with humans on board, will provide invaluable data to inform the next steps in making the Viceroy a reality.

Hawaii has emerged as a major supporter of the project, with the Hawaii Seaglider Initiative, a partnership involving numerous companies including Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, Mokulele Airlines, and United Airlines, aiming to accelerate the development of the Seaglider.

Mokulele Airlines, known as “Hawaii’s favorite island hopper,” is set to become the first airline to operate the Viceroy. The company anticipates that fares will be significantly lower than current options, with tickets from Oahu to Maui expected to cost no more than $30, compared to the usual $100 on a Hawaiian Airlines flight. This significant cost reduction could revolutionize travel in the region.
