The 1966 Corvette was a year of unprecedented success for Chevrolet, with production numbers reaching a staggering 27,720 units. The convertible body style accounted for a significant portion of this output, claiming over 64% of the total sales.

The introduction of the powerful 427ci big-block engines further fueled the Corvette’s popularity, leading to a surge in demand for the convertible model. Among the various engine options available, the L72 was particularly sought after, finding its way into over 5,500 Corvettes.

The L36, a 427ci unit producing 390 horsepower, was also a popular choice, attracting approximately 5,000 buyers. The L79, a 327ci engine with 350 horsepower, remained a consistent seller, equipping 7,500 Corvettes.

Despite its impressive history, the Corvette featured in these images is currently in a state of disrepair. The original engine, transmission, shifter, clutch, and other essential components are missing, and the remaining parts are in poor condition.

The frame is affected by rust, the seats are damaged, and the paint is severely faded. The owner estimates the paint’s condition to be a 1 out of 10, and it’s not even the original Nassau Blue color.

Additional signs of neglect include non-original door panels, a missing carpet, and a cracked passenger side dashpad. The recent auction for a 1967 Corvette in Springfield, Nebraska, has sparked a lot of interest in the automotive community. Despite its dilapidated condition, with a missing top and non original paint, the convertible sold for a hefty $30,100.

The intense bidding war, with over 30 participants, suggests that the buyer has ambitious plans for the restoration. It remains to be seen how and when this Corvette will hit the road again, but it’s clear that the new owner has a significant investment ahead of them.

The fact that the car sold for such a high price, despite its obvious flaws, speaks to the enduring appeal of the Corvette model. It’s a testament to the brand’s iconic status and the passion that many enthusiasts have for these classic vehicles. The buyer will likely face a long and challenging road ahead as they work to restore the Corvette to its former glory.

However, the potential reward is great, as a fully restored Corvette can be a valuable asset. It will be interesting to follow the progress of this restoration project and see how the new owner approaches the task.

Will they opt for a complete overhaul, bringing the car back to its original condition? Or will they take a more personalized approach, incorporating modern upgrades and modifications? Whatever the path they choose, it’s clear that this Corvette is destined for a bright future.
