This year at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, BMW introduced the Skytop, a striking two-seater sports car based on the M8 Competition convertible. The vehicle generated significant attention, with hints from BMW suggesting it could go into production in limited quantities. Car and Driver even had the opportunity to test drive the concept, which heightened interest. BMW has now confirmed that the Skytop will indeed be produced, with only 50 units planned.
The production version of the Skytop will retain the bold design of the original concept. It features a pointed front end highlighted by sleek LED headlights, while sharp creases flow along the sides of the car. The targa-style roof is supported by a leather-wrapped rollover bar, and the two removable roof panels, also trimmed in leather, can be conveniently stored in the luggage compartment.
In terms of color, the Skytop will be offered exclusively in the hand-painted Floating Sundown Silver, which was featured in the concept. The design is further distinguished by an aluminum spine running from the hood to the rear deck lid. Unique to this model, the doors are opened via small winglets that extend from the silver window trim instead of traditional handles, adding a modern touch.
The interior of the Skytop is luxurious, featuring rich brown leather upholstery and an elegant gear selector with a crystal appearance. The cabin is equipped with a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system for an enhanced audio experience. Under the hood, the Skytop houses a powerful 617-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, capable of accelerating from zero to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds.
Demand for the Skytop has been incredibly high, with all 50 units already sold out. While BMW has not disclosed the official pricing, earlier estimates suggested a price tag of around $542,000 when the concept was first introduced. The combination of its striking design, impressive performance, and limited availability makes the Skytop a highly sought-after vehicle among collectors and automotive enthusiasts alike.
