FCA US LLC has initiated a recall affecting 129,313 pre-facelift Ram 1500 pickup trucks due to a malfunctioning turn signal self canceling feature. According to Stellantis, the issue lies with the steering column control module (SCCM), which may not function as intended.
The affected SCCMs were manufactured by BCS Automotive Interface Solutions in Mexico. The recall campaign was prompted by a February 22, 2024, investigation into the problem.
After a thorough review by FCA’s engineering and manufacturing divisions, the automaker determined that the faulty SCCMs were noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108.
Despite identifying the issue on September 4, the recall announcement wasn’t made until September 25. The affected Ram 1500 trucks were produced between March 24, 2023, and December 27, 2023, for the 2023 and 2024 model years. The recall does not include the Ram 1500 Classic, which is based on the previous generation Ram pickup.
The Ram 1500 is currently facing a number of challenges in the competitive pickup truck market. Despite the introduction of a new, powerful straight-six engine, sales have declined significantly compared to the previous year. The lack of a V8 option, coupled with the high base price, has made the 1500 less appealing to many buyers.
To address these issues, Ram is focusing on improving its product offerings and pricing strategies. The brand is working on developing new features and technologies to make the 1500 more attractive to consumers. Additionally, Ram is exploring ways to reduce the base price of the 1500, making it more competitive with rival models.
However, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will be enough to reverse the decline in sales. The pickup truck market is highly competitive, and Ram faces stiff competition from established rivals like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
