The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 was a factory built muscle car that offered enthusiasts affordable performance. Unlike today, when high performance American muscle cars come with hefty price tags, the 1968 SS 396 was a relatively affordable option.

While performance oriented intermediates had been available since the early 1960s, the GTO, introduced by Pontiac in 1964, ignited a widespread trend of factory built muscle cars. Chevrolet soon followed suit with the Chevelle Malibu SS, which, especially when equipped with the Z16 option, became a formidable competitor to the Tri-Power GTO.

The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 was a significant departure from its predecessors. It featured a redesigned body with a shorter wheelbase, a longer hood, a shorter deck, and a more curvaceous profile.

The interior was also upgraded, offering bucket seats as an option for those seeking a more sporty driving experience. The SS 396 was available with several options to enhance its appearance, including exterior accent stripes and a front bench seat. The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 was a compelling option for those seeking a powerful and stylish muscle car that wouldn’t break the bank.

Its combination of performance, affordability, and distinctive styling made it a popular choice among enthusiasts. The 1968 Chevelle SS 396 was a muscle car that offered a remarkable combination of affordability, performance, and style. Despite its low price tag of $2,875 (equivalent to $26,014 today), it didn’t compromise on power or handling.

Under the hood, it featured a potent 396 cubic inch V8 engine that could be upgraded to the legendary L78 option for even more performance. The L78 engine, with its big port heads, solid lifters, and 800 cfm Holley four barrel carburetor, delivered a thrilling driving experience.

The Chevelle SS 396 also boasted a striking exterior design, featuring a redesigned body, a domed hood, a blacked-out grille, and distinctive badges. Inside, the cabin offered a comfortable and sporty interior with bucket seats and a center console.

The car’s handling was further enhanced by its heavy duty suspension package, wider Firestone tires, and optional power steering and front disc brakes. The Chevelle SS 396’s affordability, coupled with its impressive performance and stylish design, made it a popular choice among muscle car enthusiasts in the late 1960s.

While other muscle cars were available at similar prices, the Chevelle SS 396 stood out due to its combination of value, reliability, and exciting driving experience.

Although today’s muscle cars are significantly more expensive, the 1968 Chevelle SS 396 remains a highly sought after classic, with surviving examples commanding premium prices.
