Volkswagen has issued a second recall for nearly 6,500 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT electric cars. This time, the issue is with individual battery cells that can fail over time. To address this, Audi will provide a software update that will detect battery related problems and replace affected modules at no cost to owners.

Until the update is available, owners should limit charging to 80%. The recall affects cars produced between March 2021 and December 2023. This is the second recall for these models.

The first recall in March 2024 involved a short circuit within the battery module. Affected vehicles were inspected and some received new battery modules. However, new findings indicate that individual battery cells can still fail, necessitating this additional recall.

The software update will be available in the first quarter of 2025 and will monitor the battery for anomalies in real time. If a problem is detected, the affected module will be replaced by an Audi dealer. Audi has stated that battery cell modules produced after May 27, 2023, are not affected by this recall.

Audi has issued a recall for its 2022-2024 RS e-tron GT models due to potential issues with the battery cell modules. Affected vehicles, produced between March 2021 and February 2024, will require the replacement of the faulty modules. The recall also impacts the mechanically similar Porsche Taycan, which uses the same battery components.

While both the e-tron GT and Taycan have received updates for the 2025 model year, the Porsche is already available for purchase in the US market. Audi, however, has not yet released the updated e-tron GT, leaving prospective buyers with the choice of the current-generation model.

The facelifted e-tron GT, revealed earlier this year, offers three performance levels: S e-tron GT, RS e-tron GT, and RS e-tron GT performance. The top of the line RS e-tron GT performance boasts an impressive 912 horsepower, making it the most powerful production Audi to date. However, it falls short of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which can produce up to 1,092 horsepower in its most aggressive driving mode.
