Toyota is recalling its 2023 and 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid models due to a brake component issue that affects a total of 42,199 vehicles. While this number includes vehicles worldwide, not all affected units were sold in the United States. The recall has been documented in filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the agency responsible for overseeing vehicle safety and recalls in the U.S.

The cause of the recall is a software error in the skid-control electronic control unit (ECU) that oversees the vehicle’s braking system. This malfunction can lead to a loss of power brake assist while the vehicle is turning, resulting in a hard brake pedal and reduced braking force. Such a condition poses significant safety risks, as it could hinder a driver’s ability to stop the vehicle effectively in critical moments.

The vehicles impacted by this recall are equipped with a brake actuator assembly supplied by Bosch. However, other Toyota and Lexus vehicles available in the U.S. do not feature the same assembly design, meaning they are not expected to be included in the recall. This clarification helps to assure owners of other models that their vehicles are not affected by this issue.

To address the problem, Toyota will provide a free update to the skid-control ECU for all affected Corolla Cross Hybrid owners. Notification letters are scheduled to be sent out by November 19, 2023. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA recalls website for additional information on whether their vehicle is affected and to stay informed about the recall process.
