Nissan will introduce its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in the U.S. next year with a PHEV version of the Rogue compact SUV, set to go on sale in 2025. This move will mark Nissan’s entrance into the hybrid market, as the company currently lacks any hybrid models in its lineup. The new Rogue PHEV will be part of Nissan’s broader strategy to expand its hybrid offerings in the U.S.
The Rogue PHEV will share its platform and many components with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, as both companies are part of the same Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. The Rogue is expected to feature a similar drivetrain to the Outlander, which uses a 2.4-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors, producing 248 horsepower.
This will make the Rogue PHEV more powerful than the standard Rogue, which has a 201-hp turbocharged engine. Additionally, the Outlander PHEV has an EPA-estimated electric-only driving range of 28 miles, providing a hint at what to expect from the Rogue.
The new Rogue hybrid will enter a competitive field of compact SUV hybrids, with rivals like the Dodge Hornet, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Toyota RAV4 all offering PHEV models. This segment has seen rapid growth as more consumers seek efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional gas-powered vehicles.
In addition to the Rogue PHEV, Nissan has plans to introduce its e-Power hybrid technology to the U.S. market in 2026. Unlike conventional hybrids, e-Power hybrids use electric motors to drive the wheels while the gasoline engine functions as a generator to recharge the battery. This system is already available in several global Nissan models, and the 2025 Murano, Kicks, and Rogue are strong candidates for adopting this setup in the future.
As Nissan prepares to expand its hybrid lineup, more details are expected to emerge about its upcoming gas-electric models. The introduction of the Rogue PHEV and the future launch of e-Power technology signal Nissan’s commitment to offering more environmentally friendly vehicles in the U.S. market.
