The Honda Passport TrailSport debuted in 2022 and was met with a lukewarm reception due to its lack of substantial off-road capability. While it came with rugged features like skid plates and mountain-themed emblems, it didn’t offer significant improvements in ground clearance or torque management compared to the standard Passport. Although Honda made some minor updates in subsequent years, the original model’s shortcomings meant that the TrailSport struggled to establish itself as a genuine off-road vehicle.

With the launch of the second-generation Passport in 2026, Honda has a prime opportunity to strengthen the TrailSport’s off-road credentials. Initial impressions from testing a prototype suggest a focus on enhancing performance. During a drive through the challenging terrain of Moab’s Chicken Corners trail and the rocky ledges near Merrimac Butte, the new model’s off-road features were put to the test, demonstrating improvements in capability and design.

One of the key advancements for the 2026 Passport is its increased body rigidity. The new model boasts a 72 percent increase in lateral stiffness at the front and a 50 percent improvement in torsional stiffness at the rear compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the TrailSport features a specially tuned suspension system with forged steel arms and cast-iron knuckles, which should enhance durability and resilience when tackling rugged terrain. These modifications suggest that the new Passport is better suited for serious off-road adventures.

Under the hood, the 2026 Passport TrailSport is equipped with a new double-overhead-cam 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed transmission. While specific power figures are still forthcoming, the engine in the 2025 Honda Pilot produces 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, indicating similar performance for the Passport. Furthermore, the redesigned i-VTM4 rear drive unit is engineered to offer improved torque distribution and faster response, ensuring better traction in challenging conditions.

In terms of design and functionality, the 2026 Passport TrailSport includes several thoughtful enhancements. A redesigned front bumper improves the approach angle, while heavy-duty skid plates protect vital components from off-road hazards. The vehicle also caters to novice off-roaders with features such as a Trail mode that activates a front camera and provides tire-path predictions.

Additionally, real-time updates on compass direction, elevation, and vehicle pitch are displayed in the gauge cluster, contributing to an overall improved off-road experience. These upgrades position the 2026 Passport TrailSport as a more competitive option in the off-road SUV market.
