A 1970 Ford Torino SportsRoof, a classic muscle car known for its sleek design and powerful engine, recently sold at auction for a staggering $71,570. This particular model featured significant performance upgrades to its 429 ci Cobra Jet V8 engine, making it a highly sought after collectible.
While the average selling price for similar cars is between $40,000 and $65,000, this exceptional example’s unique modifications and condition raised its value well above the norm.
The second generation Torino, introduced in 1970, boasted a striking new design that departed from the boxy aesthetics of its predecessors. Inspired by jet aircraft of the 1950s, the car’s elongated hood, low roofline, and flowing lines exude a sense of speed and sophistication.
The 1970 model year is often considered the pinnacle of the Torino’s design, with subsequent generations falling short in terms of visual appeal. The previous owner of this black Torino SportsRoof acquired it in 2018 and started on a comprehensive restoration.
The 429 ci Cobra Jet V8 engine received a thorough overhaul, while the front end was rebuilt and the steering system was converted from power assisted to manual. Although this might seem counterintuitive, the manual conversion is said to enhance precision driving and reduce the steering effort.
Exterior highlights of this car include a matte black shaker hood, body-color dual mirrors, bright wheel well and window trim, distinctive ‘429’ and ‘Cobra’ badging, chrome bumpers, dual exhaust outlets, and a set of Magnum 500 style 15″ wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.
The suspension features coil springs up front, leaf springs at the rear, and Bilstein RCD shocks all around. Inside, the red vinyl seats, color coordinated carpeting, contrasting black dashboard pad, lap belts, Hurst T-handle floor shifter, Philco push button AM radio, red leather steering wheel, and auxiliary gauges create a sporty and retro atmosphere.
The heart of this beast is a 429 cubic inch Cobra Jet engine, breathing through a Ram Air shaker scoop and fed by a refurbished Rochester Quadrajet four barrel carburetor.
Under the hood, you’ll also find custom aluminum rocker arms, JE pistons, and a 2.5 inch dual exhaust system with stainless steel Turbo style mufflers. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Toploader four speed manual gearbox, and the rev limiter has been removed, allowing for unbridled performance.
