The 1989 model year marked the end of an era for Mercedes-Benz with the conclusion of one of its longest-running platforms: the R107 SL convertible.
Launched in 1971, this iconic model remained in production for nearly two decades. By the time it was retired, over 150,000 units had been sold in the United States. But did the “last prove to be the best of them all?” This 1989 model on offer provides a chance to find out.

Ads for the SL emphasized its versatility, showcasing how it could transform into three different versions: a hardtop, a soft top, and a fully open convertible.
This particular model features an Arctic White exterior with a color-matched hardtop included. As convertible season arrives for some and winds down for others, this SL stands out for its pristine, unmodified condition—especially impressive for a 35-year-old vehicle.
The SL was marketed as a luxurious grand touring roadster, intended for those who could afford to live in style. “Spoil yourself,” one ad urged. Another boldly invited, “Once… just once… have the automobile you want.”
Beneath the hood lies a 5.6-liter V8 engine with a Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. At the time of its release, it was rated at 227 horsepower and 279 lb-ft of torque—solid numbers for the era and enough to give this two-seat roadster a spirited drive.
According to its CARFAX report, this SL has a clean, accident-free history. Originally registered in Louisiana, it has since traveled to Florida, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, and Arizona before reaching the current selling dealer.
The car resided in the desert southwest for at least the last 13 years, with an Arizona emissions inspection completed in July 2023.
Prior maintenance included work on the air conditioning compressor, fluid changes, the power steering system, and washer hoses in February 2021.
“Go ahead. Enjoy yourself. Feel this Mercedes-Benz turn an ordinary back road into an indelible driving experience,” Mercedes once said of the SL.
