In the lead-up to the Brazilian Grand Prix, Alex Albon was forced to withdraw following a serious crash during a heavily rain-affected qualifying session. In addition to Albon’s crash, other drivers, including Franco Colapinto, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, and Fernando Alonso, faced incidents of their own. Colapinto, Albon’s teammate, caused the first red flag by spinning at Turn 3, although his car sustained less damage, allowing Williams to repair it in time for the race. Sainz of Ferrari was another high-profile casualty, crashing out in Q2. Ferrari managed to repair Sainz’s car but chose to install new engine and gearbox parts, relegating him to a pit-lane start due to FIA regulations on changing parts during Parc Fermé.
Aston Martin drivers also faced setbacks, with both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso crashing. Alonso’s incident was particularly impactful, with his car’s nose buried into the barrier. Despite the extensive damage, Aston Martin’s team worked relentlessly to repair both cars. They opted to fit older replacement gearboxes, which enabled both cars to avoid pit-lane penalties and start from the grid. Team principal Mike Krack confirmed that the team would work up until the last moment to have both cars ready for the race.
Williams’ setback with Albon’s crash added to the challenges of a demanding triple-header race schedule, which has put a strain on teams and drivers. Although frustrated by Albon’s withdrawal, team boss Vowles expressed relief that all drivers were unharmed in the chaotic session. The situation underscored the relentless demands of Formula 1 and the need for adaptability in extreme conditions.
