Chevrolet Faces Transition with Camaro and Malibu Discontinued in 2023

General Motors, the largest automaker in the US, maintained its lead in the market for the first nine months of the year, selling nearly 1.95 million vehicles. However, its Chevrolet brand is struggling. While GM’s sales declined by one percent during this period, Chevrolet’s sales dropped by a more significant three percent.

The brand’s other models, though, helped offset this decline with positive results. The situation could worsen before it improves, as Chevrolet discontinued production of the sixth-generation Camaro in December 2023 and the affordable Malibu mid-size sedan this fall.

The discontinuation of the Camaro isn’t a major issue, as only about 6,000 units of the remaining inventory were sold. However, the ninth-generation Malibu is still selling relatively well, with sales declining by only 16% to 93,533 units. Once these models are phased out, Chevrolet will be left with a limited passenger car lineup, similar to Ford, which primarily focuses on the C8 Corvette.

Many enthusiasts fondly remember Chevrolet’s past lineup of performance-oriented passenger cars, such as the 1990s Impala SS. This particular model, based on the Caprice 9C1 police package, featured a detuned 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine from the fourth-generation Corvette.

Digital artists continue to pay homage to this iconic model. Rostislav Prokop, a Czech Republic-based virtual artist, recently created a stunning digital rendition of a black and gold Impala SS. This follows his previous work on a slammed El Camino SS restomod.

The Chevrolet Impala SS, a virtual restomod, is a sight to behold. Dubbed the ‘Gollpala,’ or more fittingly, the ‘Gold and Black’ edition, this heavily modified sedan boasts an aggressive aerodynamic kit with a massive front lip, widebody wheel arches, a humongous diffuser, and a subtle rear wing. The real showstopper, however, is the vertically stacked quad exhaust setup that protrudes through the rear license plate.

Golden accents adorn the massive deep-dish aftermarket wheels and even the engine bay. Speaking of the engine, this Impala SS packs a 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8, a heart transplant from a Hellcat, delivering over 700 horsepower.

This Moparized Chevy could easily outrun many modern supercars, all while blinding them with its gold and black bling and slammed widebody stance. Given Chevrolet’s decision to focus solely on the C8 Corvette, enthusiasts are left to dream of such wild restomod projects to satisfy their sedan cravings.
