At the 2023 SEMA show, Kia showcased two concept vehicles that emphasize rugged design and off-road capabilities, suggesting a focus on outdoor adventure. Named the “Advntr” and “Wkndr,” these vehicles cater to different aspects of camping and exploration. The Advntr is an off-road version of Kia’s electric EV9 SUV, while the Wkndr is based on Kia’s Purpose Beyond Vehicles (PBV) line, specifically modified to support a camping lifestyle. These concepts seem tailored for weekend warriors and off-grid enthusiasts, embodying the automaker’s vision for rugged, purpose-built electric adventure vehicles.

The Advntr concept is an EV9 SUV modified to tackle tougher terrains. Kia has outfitted it with a three-inch lift, which enhances ground clearance, making it suitable for overlanding and trail use. Reinforced rocker panels and custom front and rear fascias improve approach and departure angles, allowing the vehicle to handle rougher landscapes. While Kia hasn’t detailed the exact wheel and tire specifications, the setup appears robust, aimed at providing better traction off-road. A custom roof rack adds versatility, with space for standard luggage and a rooftop tent, adding functionality for overnight stays in remote areas.

Similarly, the Wkndr concept—derived from Kia’s PBV delivery vans—receives several off-road modifications. This van features a lift kit, like the Advntr, although the exact height isn’t specified. The Wkndr uses similar wheels and tires, likely enhancing traction on varied surfaces. Its interior is modular, designed for adaptability, resembling a “Swiss Army Knife on wheels,” as described by Kia. It includes an outboard storage system that increases interior space, providing practical storage solutions for camping gear and other essentials, which improves functionality when the van is stationary.

The Wkndr also incorporates sustainable energy solutions, employing solar panels and innovative “hydro turbine wheels.” These components allow the vehicle to recharge its batteries multiple times, adding value for extended trips away from charging stations. Furthermore, the Wkndr includes an onboard compressor, useful for airing up tires after traversing rough trails or for inflating camping gear like air mattresses. This equipment aligns with the van’s purpose of offering self-sufficiency for off-grid adventures, an attractive feature for eco-conscious outdoor enthusiasts.

Kia’s Advntr and Wkndr concepts represent the brand’s commitment to versatile and sustainable adventure vehicles, combining off-road readiness with eco-friendly technology. By leveraging the electric platform of the EV9 and the customizable nature of PBVs, Kia is exploring new ways to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts. These concept vehicles underscore Kia’s interest in the outdoor adventure segment, showing how electric vehicles can support rugged exploration and align with a lifestyle increasingly focused on sustainability and adventure.
