The iconic Dodge Charger Daytona, born in 1969 to meet NASCAR homologation requirements, saw a limited production run of just 503 units. Its Plymouth counterpart, the Superbird, while largely identical, was produced in significantly larger numbers due to changes in NASCAR regulations.
This resulted in a production run of nearly 2,000 Superbirds, making them far more common than their Dodge sibling. While the rare Hemi-powered Superbirds command astronomical prices at auctions, those equipped with the 440 cubic inch RB engine, though still valuable, typically sell for less than $200,000.
However, certain rare color and option combinations can significantly increase a Superbird’s value. This particular Alpine White Superbird, though not unique in its configuration, boasts a fascinating history as it was once owned by the legendary NASCAR driver Richard Petty himself, who famously raced and won in this very model.
Richard Petty, the iconic NASCAR legend, owned this 1970 Plymouth Superbird from 1982 to 2013. During its 31-year stay in his possession, it was a regular fixture at the Petty Museum. Restored in 2014 by Petty’s Garage, the Superbird is finished in the original Alpine White with black decals and a black vinyl roof.
It boasts a numbers-matching 375-horsepower 440 cubic inch V8 paired with a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The interior features black upholstery, bucket seats, and a center console.
The car’s authenticity is further enhanced by Richard Petty’s signature on the trunk lid and glovebox, as well as his figure embroidered on the front seat headrests. This piece of NASCAR history will be auctioned off at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2025 auction on January 18, 2025.
