Carbon removal marketplace Supercritical now offers its users access to a new category of nature-based solutions labeled Community Agroforestry.
With this update, the platform now provides its clients with the chance to support carbon removal projects in the Global South that serve the dual purpose of decarbonizing the atmosphere and improving the livelihoods of local communities.
Through the Community Agroforestry category, Supercritical’s first nature-based offering, 10 million tonnes of credible removals will be introduced for purchase on the marketplace in the following years.
Driven by the pressure of increasing transparency and credibility of nature-based CO2 removal solutions, Supercritical launched the new category with an aim to divert efforts from deforestation avoidance towards tree planting.
While traditional nature-based carbon removal solutions rely on commercial tree planting, the projects in the Community Agroforestry category provide compensations to the local people who are owners and stewards of the land.
Up to 90% of carbon credit profits from the initiatives listed in the Community Agroforestry category are directed towards local farmers and indigenous communities, creating sustainable income streams and empowering underserved groups, extending the financial reach to also cover improvements for schools and healthcare.
As explained by Paula McGregor, Climate Scientist, Nature-Based Solutions at Supercritical, the marketplace verifies and tracks carbon removals in real time using a satellite MRV technology.

Additionally, to guarantee the removal is genuine, they also review data from Planet’s Forest Carbon Due Diligence package, which includes 3-D and 2-D imagery from sensors like GEDI located at the International Space Station.
Michelle You, CEO of Supercritical, commented, “Radical transparency and trust are key to the future of carbon markets. Through rigorous vetting and a focus on community, we’re bringing credibility back to nature-based carbon markets, ensuring the highest standards for buyers.”
In the bigger picture, this novel approach not only helps address climate change, but also catalyzes social and economic development, creating a model that builds a better future for both the environment and its inhabitants.
