ROCHESTER, Minn. – Mayo High School hosted its sixth annual finance camp. It was hosted by Think Bank. Volunteers from Think Bank, Altra Credit Union and First Alliance showed up.
300 students from John Marshall, Mayo and Century High School taking personal finance attended the camp. Students had to pick a career they were interested in and learned how to budget after paying for expenses such as housing, transportation and food.
One John Marshall Senior Joseph Lueth says it was a real eye opener attending the camp.
“You can save up money to do whatever you want and you know exactly where you’re money is going and like what is profiting and what is helping and what is not,” said Lueth.
Another senior Brayson Sawyer says it’s never too early to start managing your money.
“I think it’s always better to start early instead of getting yourself into debt and working your way out of debt,” said Sawyer.
Mayo High School business teacher James McCormick says in the past six years they’ve hosted the camp students have used the knowledge in the real world.
“A lot of the kids I hear from are off at college and they talk about some of the expenses we’ve talked about and what those would be at college,’ said McCormick. “And they have just shared it’s been really beneficial to have to go through and make that budget.”
The next camp will be hosted on April 24, 2025.
