(Reuters) -Memorial services for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter are expected to take place over six days in Georgia and Washington, D.C., after he died Dec. 29 at the age of 100.
Here are some details on his funeral plans:
WHEN IS THE FUNERAL?
Carter’s (NYSE:) state funeral, a national tribute traditionally reserved for heads of state, began Saturday Jan. 4 with ceremonies in Carter’s home state of Georgia, according to a schedule released by the U.S. military.
It culminates in a National Cathedral service Jan. 9 in Washington, then a private burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
MOTORCADE, PUBLIC VIEWING
A motorcade will take Carter through his hometown and to Atlanta, with stops at the state capitol and then the Carter Presidential Center, where he will lie in repose until being flown to Washington on Tuesday Jan. 7.
In Washington, he will lie in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Jan. 7 through the morning of Jan. 9. George H.W. Bush was the last U.S. president to lie there, a tradition dating back to Abraham Lincoln.
Members of Congress will pay their respects to Carter beginning at 3 p.m. ET (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, with the public invited from 7 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday from 7 a.m. ET.
A funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. ET.
President Joe Biden last year said Carter asked him to deliver the eulogy at the service. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will attend.
Afterwards, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and buried in a private ceremony in Plains.
HOW TO VIEW OR ATTEND CARTER EVENTS
Jimmycartertribute.org, a website connected to the Carter Center, has a live feed of the events.
Local news channels are also showing online live feeds from the Carter Presidential Center, including CNBC affiliate 11 Alive and FOX 5 in Atlanta.
Carter’s viewing at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda will be broadcast live online by C-Span and by other national broadcasters. Washington’s National Cathedral will carry Carter’s service live on their YouTube channel.
The public can enter the Carter Center in Georgia from 7 p.m. Jan. 4 through 6 a.m. Jan. 7 and the U.S. Capitol through the visitors center on Jan. 7 and 8. Both will have security screening.
OTHER PUBLIC OBSERVANCES
Biden declared a national day of mourning on Jan. 9. He ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days at military posts and on federal buildings.
Rather than flowers, Carter’s family asked for donations to his namesake Atlanta-based center to help its work in global health, peace, and human rights.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close on Thursday, a customary gesture to honor deceased presidents.
