The International Carbon Registry (ICR) has received a notable full endorsement from the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA).
This recognition greenlights ICR as one of the leading carbon standards on the voluntary carbon market, solidifying the integrity and high quality of the carbon credits projects hosted under the ICR platform.
The ICROA was funded as a code of best practices that serves to fortify the integrity of the voluntary carbon market. Its endorsement program verifies that GHG projects follow high standards of operation across governance, registration, validation, and verification.
For an organization to receive the ICROA endorsement, they need to go through a third-party evaluation process that ensures the initiative complies with the elaborate endorsement criteria that also review a project’s independence, social and environmental impact, and consideration of stakeholders.
In 2024, the ICROA updated its guidelines, adding more strict requirements that also cover conflict-of-interest management and transparency.
The ICR is the second organization to receive the full ICROA endorsement under these updated criteria, successfully receiving this accreditation in under 12 months.
Established in 2020, the ICR currently has 121 nature- and tech-based climate projects listed on its platform. To ensure that all the projects meet the registration and credit issuance requirements, the ICR relies on the support of 20 Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs).
At its core, the ICR is based on ISO standards for project validation, verification, and accreditation, which it enhances with a set of comprehensive requirements that also include considerations of innovation, efficiency, and standardization.

Gudmundur Sigbergsson, ICR Founder and CEO, stated, “Receiving ICROA’s endorsement is a significant milestone for the International Carbon Registry (ICR). This recognition validates the integrity of the ICR program.”
He added, “We firmly believe that innovation and integrity can coexist within the carbon markets, and we are dedicated to embracing both values as we continue to advance. Most importantly, the endorsement enhances the credibility of the climate projects registered with the ICR globally, reinforcing the trust in the quality ICR’s credits bring.”
