Launched by DP World in December 2024, the six-month trial began on January 1.
It offers importers 50kg of carbon credits for every loaded import container processed through DP World’s London Gateway and Southampton terminals.
John Trenchard, vice president of commercial and supply chain, DP World in the UK, said: “Through our revolutionary Carbon Inset Programme, we are working with partners in the DP World group to build on what we have already achieved with our Modal Shift Programme, which reduced the carbon emissions of our customers by more than 17,000 tonnes in its first year. ”
The initiative aims to lessen indirect emissions, with a target of registering 50 per cent of import cargo owners, potentially cutting over 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from supply chains.
DP World’s carbon credits come from its subsidiary, Unifeeder, and are independently verified and pooled quarterly.
