The rescue happened on Monday, Feb. 17, when Rockland paramedics were called to a Garnerville residence after a woman complained of headaches and nausea, according to Rockland Paramedic Services.
As they assessed her condition, their portable carbon monoxide detectors began alerting to high CO levels inside the home.
Realizing the danger, Reinertsen and Nava immediately evacuated the house and discovered that all residents—five adults and four children—were experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, including headaches and nausea.
The family members were transported to Montefiore Nyack Hospital for evaluation and treatment using three ambulances—two from Haverstraw Ambulance Corps, Inc. and one from Congers-Valley Cottage Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The SW Johnson Fire Department later responded to the scene and confirmed the presence of carbon monoxide inside the home.
Two paramedics who responded to the home, Todd Reinertsen and Scott Nava, were both commended for their heroic efforts.
“Their quick action saved lives today,” Rockland Paramedic Services wrote in a social media post.
