JAKARTA – Ahead of next week’s Earth Day commemoration, Apple is providing updates on its ambitious target of becoming a fully carbon-neutral company by 2030. In its latest report, the Cupertino-based company announced that it has succeeded in reducing more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions globally compared to 2015.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiative, stated that this achievement was the result of various strategic steps by Apple in reducing environmental impacts across its business lines. However, he also reminded that challenges will get bigger as the 2030 deadline approaches.
“We are very proud of the progress we have made towards Apple 2030, which includes every aspect of our business,” Jackson said. Currently, we are using more clean energy and recycled materials than ever before. We are also protecting water sources and preventing waste around the world, as well as investing heavily in nature’s preservation. Getting closer to 2030, the challenges are getting tougher and we answer it with innovation, collaboration, and a sense of urgency.
Apple’s 2030 strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% from 2015 levels, with remaining emissions compensated for using high-quality carbon credit.
Some of Apple’s latest achievements in its environmental efforts include:
– There are 17.8 renewable electric gigawatts currently used in Apple’s global supply chain.
– The renewable energy used by Apple suppliers has managed to prevent 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2024 , an increase of more than 17% compared to the previous year.
– Nearly 2 million metric tons of emissions were successfully prevented by suppliers working with Apple to increase their energy efficiency.
– Apple’s Zero Waste program helped divert about 600,000 metric tons of waste from the final disposal site last year.
– Since launching the Supply Clean Water Program in 2013, Apple and its suppliers have saved more than 90 billion gallons of clean water.
In addition to the press release, Apple also released its annual Environmental Progress Report detailing various corporate environmental initiatives and achievements, while strengthening its commitment to becoming a more environmentally friendly company in the next five years.
