Punjab Renewable Energy Systems Private Limited (PRESPL), an organised player in aggregating, processing and distributing biomass agricultural waste and APChemi Private Limited, a pyrolysis technology player have partnered with Intellecap to set up Biochar India Private Limited (BiocharIND), a biochar based carbon credit platform.
BiocharIND will sequester carbon dioxide (CO2), increase soil carbon, help benefit farmers through increased crop yield, improved soil health and remunerative prospects through biomass utilisation mitigating open field agriculture residues burning.
122 mt crop residue
BiocharIND will build and operate five large scale biochar projects, each processing 100 TPD of biomass input over the next 5 years with a total investment outlay of Rs 150 crore, according to a statement.
This will help in sequestering upto 106,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and benefit millions of smallholder farmers through increased crop yield via biochar based soil enrichment. BiocharIND will also produce upto 80,000 tonnes/year of wood vinegar, a biochar byproduct, which will be used for production of organic pesticide, organic herbicides and biofertilizers.
In India, over 122 million tonnes of crop residue is burnt every year which leads to a huge increase in pollution and soil degradation. BiocharIND will use these crop residues for the production of biochar and play a role in avoiding 183 million tons of CO2 emissions as well as removing 102 million tons of CO2.
The first high technology production facility of BiocharIND will be set up in Punjab-Haryana and will produce 10,000 tonnes of biochar per annum and generate about 25,000 tCO2e of carbon credits per annum. The use of biochar will increase soil health and fertility while reducing the use of harmful chemical fertilizers. The biochar generated will be provided to the farmers to boost crop yield up to 30 per cent, trials for the same have been carried out by PRESPL.
Partnership of synergy
Lt. Col. Monish Ahuja, Founder, PRESPL said, “This strategic alliance with APChemi and Intellecap brings together perfectly complementary capabilities to address India’s burgeoning crop residue challenge. While PRESPL brings extensive biomass aggregation expertise and farmer networks across 21 states, APChemi contributes breakthrough pyrolysis technology, and Intellecap adds vital carbon finance knowledge.”
Suhas Dixit, Founder, APChemi said, “This partnership represents a perfect synergy of capabilities—PRESPL’s unparalleled biomass aggregation infrastructure, APChemi’s advanced pyrolysis technology, and Intellecap’s market-making expertise in environmental finance. Our patented pyrolysis technologies and engineering excellence perfectly complement PRESPL’s biomass expertise and Intellecap’s financial innovation, enabling BiocharIND to develop scalable, cost-efficient and robust biomass pyrolysis platform. This long-term alliance establishes a sustainable blueprint for tackling agricultural waste while delivering multiple benefits across the value chain—from farmers to end consumers.”
Santosh K Singh, Managing Director-Climate and Energy, Intellecap said, “Together, we’re not just creating carbon credits—we’re building a regenerative agricultural system that delivers lasting value to farming communities while addressing climate challenges. By aligning our respective strengths, we’ve established a partnership model that balances technical innovation, operational excellence, and financial sustainability for long-term impact.”
