Wise, the global tech company known for its cross-border money transfer platform, has joined forces with carbon removal specialist Opna in a bid to support climate resilience in some of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions.

The partnership includes a £500,000 (~$677,120) investment in high-impact carbon removal initiatives across key markets in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific.

This move is a major step in Wise’s ongoing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy, which emphasizes long-term, measurable, and socially meaningful climate action.

The funds will support a curated mix of nature-based and hybrid carbon removal projects, including improved forest management and biochar production.

These efforts are concentrated in regions that are particularly exposed to climate-related risks. In addition to drawing down atmospheric carbon, the projects aim to deliver co-benefits such as local employment, biodiversity conservation, agricultural support, and gender inclusion.

Opna stands out for its commitment to evaluating carbon removal initiatives beyond just carbon metrics — placing equal importance on community impact and long-term sustainability. The company ensures that every supported project contributes to the wellbeing of local ecosystems and populations.

Wise’s ESG committee — comprised of senior staff from across global offices — began the search for a new climate partner in 2024. The selection of Opna was driven by the shared values of transparency, accountability, and tangible impact, aligning closely with Wise’s broader mission.

“At Wise we believe that real climate impact comes from understanding local context and supporting solutions that work on the ground,” said Caroline Corbett-Thompson, Global Sustainability and Social Impact Manager at Wise.

“Working with Opna has helped us take a thoughtful step forward: backing carbon removal projects that not only address emissions, but also support communities, livelihoods, and long-term resilience where it’s needed most.”

“Opna’s partnership with Wise demonstrates how businesses can align growth with climate action while staying true to their values and mission,” said Shilpika Gautam, CEO & Founder of Opna.
