Ben Eisen has been named personal finance bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal.
He has been deputy bureau chief since February 2024.
As a reporter, his articles have focused on the people who power the American economy and its financial system. He has traveled the country to report on families trying to obtain homeownership and hold on to it; small-time real estate investors and business owners; and the leaders of powerful financial institutions.
Previously, Ben was a banking and finance reporter. He led coverage of some of the nation’s largest consumer banks, connecting the decisions inside large financial institutions to the individuals they impact most. He was part of the team that covered the banking crisis of 2023.
He’s currently writing a book about the mortgage market. The book, tentatively called “The American Dream Machine,” will focus on the rise and reign of the 30-year, fixed rate mortgage, shedding light on how the country’s most important financial instrument operates.
Eisen joined the Journal in 2016 and has written about finance for nearly 15 years. He also has covered financial markets, focusing on unusual trades, questionable investments and interesting characters. He is a graduate of Cornell University.
