In a significant move toward environmental sustainability, Japan has expressed its commitment to help expand Cambodia’s carbon credit market. This collaboration was highlighted during a recent meeting between His Excellency Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, and representatives from Japanese technology firms and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) held on July 23, 2025.

During the discussions, JAXA and its affiliate companies, including Green-Carbon, Sagri Co., Ltd., Faeger Co., Ltd., Nippon Koei, Archeda, Inc., GOMI Solutions Co., Ltd., and SpaceBlast, Inc., showcased their expertise in utilizing satellite imagery and data. They expressed strong interest in working alongside Cambodian authorities to further develop the nation’s carbon credit market.

Minister Eang Sophallet welcomed this initiative, emphasizing that cooperation in this field is vital not only for environmental protection but also for safeguarding the livelihoods of Cambodian citizens against the impacts of climate change. He pointed out that the time is ripe for Cambodia to showcase its achievements in forest conservation through the carbon credit market and to incorporate innovative technologies for forest biomass.

Cambodia has been actively involved in the REDD+ project since 2014, adhering to the voluntary carbon market mechanism that facilitates the sale of forest functions capable of absorbing greenhouse gases. The country has made strides with several REDD+ projects, including the Keo Seima Project in Mondulkiri and Kratie, the South Cardamom Project in Koh Kong and Pursat, as well as initiatives under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and the Prey Thaban Project.

The collaboration between Japan and Cambodia marks a promising step towards a greener future, fostering not only environmental sustainability but also economic growth through the responsible management of natural resources.
