Learn About Permanent Carbon Dioxide Removal

Gevo provides carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits that represent actual carbon dioxide captured from the biofuel production process and sequestered thousands of feet underground in an onsite Class VI well. Gevo North Dakota offers large volumes of third-party-certified BECCS credits with guaranteed delivery.

Our high-integrity durable carbon removal credits are generated from a process called Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), providing quantifiable, certified-permanent carbon removals to help companies to mitigate their carbon footprint. These credits are generated from our operational project and ready to retire immediately.

Here’s How Carbon Dioxide Removal Works

Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) removes carbon from the atmosphere by capturing CO2 generated by the fermentation process during ethanol production. The resulting biogenic CO2 stream (as a result of fermentation) is cleaned using a water scrubber, which separates any remaining ethanol and other impurities to produce a pure stream of CO2. From the scrubber, the captured, biogenic CO2 is sent to compressors. Upon compression, the CO2 is dehydrated to remove any remaining water and is then sent to a refrigeration unit where it is subcooled to a liquid. The condensed CO2 is then lightly distilled and pumped through a flowline to a Class VI injection well onsite, where it is sequestered permanently in the Broom Creek formation.

BECCS at Gevo North Dakota: Onsite Class VI well and no transportation needed

The entire carbon capture and sequestration process occurs at the Gevo North Dakota site and no offsite transportation of CO2 is needed. The facility site (both for the ethanol and co-products production, carbon capture equipment and the Class VI well) is approximately 150 acres in Richardton, North Dakota. The Gevo North Dakota property is ideally situated above the Broom Creek geological formation and can expand its annual CCS volumes from 180,000 tCO2 per year today to 1 million tCO2 each year.

The Class VI well permit and sequestered volumes are available on the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources website.

Gevo North Dakota Offers a Unique Value Proposition for CCS

    Operational

CCS started in 2022 and more than 378K credits have been generated.
Added Value: An operational project can guarantee delivery and the delays to get a project off the ground (and thus delays in delivery of credits) are not a risk for Gevo North Dakota.

    Delivery at Scale

The well is permitted for 180K tCO2/year and can scale to 1M tCO2/year.
Added Value: While many engineered removals projects can only deliver a few tonnes in carbon credits each year, Gevo North Dakota can offer large volumes of credits to mitigate a company’s carbon footprint.

    Tracked Feedstocks

Gevo’s Verity™ tracking platform will trace feedstocks from the field level through the production process to trace biomass sustainability and prevent double counting of carbon abatement.
Added Value: Encouraging regenerative agriculture, improved soil health, and reduced dependence on fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides mean more resilient farming long-term.

    Permanence

Credits from this project are certified by Puro.Earth for 1,000+ years.
Added Value: Third-party validation from the world’s first registry focused on engineered carbon removals gives confidence in the quality of the BECCS project.

    Offset to Inset

Credit purchases help fund the transition to SAF & future deliveries may be tied to SAF production.
Added Value: Scope 3 and Scope 1 optionality adds to the program appeal.

    Multiple Co-Benefits

    This project ties to UN SDGs 2, 3, 6, 8, 9. 12, 13, and 15.
Added Value: Global appeal to sustainability minded businesses, agencies, and other entities wishing to be more holistic in their approach, such as by supporting rural prosperity.

Transparency Is a Core Tenet of Gevo’s BECCS Project

Credits generated from this project go through a rigorous third-party verification process. All credits are certified by Puro.earth, the world’s leading crediting platform for engineered carbon removal, under their Geologically Stored Carbon methodology.

Credit issuances, retirements, and project and audit documents are all publicly available on the Puro.Earth website.
