In a forward-looking initiative aimed at environmental sustainability and agricultural innovation, Tripura’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare is actively exploring the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the generation and preservation of carbon credits through sustainable farming practices.
This announcement was made by Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ratan Lal Nath, during a mega organic sapling plantation drive held on Saturday in Abhicharan village under the Mohanpur Assembly constituency. The event was organized by the Lefunga Agricultural Subdivision and featured the planting of over 1,200 organic mango and pink jackfruit saplings, with the Minister personally participating in the plantation.
Addressing the gathering, Nath emphasized the urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to safeguard future generations from environmental catastrophe. He explained that major global corporations such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are bound by emission limits and often purchase carbon credits to offset their excess emissions. “Tripura is seriously considering this model,” he stated, adding that the Agriculture Department will work toward formal agreements and ensure carbon credit preservation at the grassroots level.
Highlighting the state’s progress in organic farming, the Minister shared that prior to 2018, only 2,000 hectares of land were under organic cultivation. Today, that figure has surged to 26,500 hectares, involving over 26,800 farmers. He credited the growth to the formation of 53 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), which are actively promoting organic agriculture across the state.
Nath also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to farmer welfare, stating, “For us, farmers are akin to deities. The government is providing every possible support to make people self-reliant.” He proudly noted India’s emergence as the fourth-largest economy in the world, and the global recognition of its education policy, adopted by 11 countries.
To combat global warming and retain carbon in the soil, the Minister urged citizens to plant more trees and adopt sustainable practices. He encouraged tree plantation on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations, turning personal milestones into acts of environmental stewardship.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Runiel Debbarma, Executive Member of the TTAADC; Ranbir Debbarma, Chairman of Lefunga Block; officials from the Agriculture Department and other notable guests.
This initiative marks a significant step toward integrating climate action with agricultural development, positioning Tripura as a proactive player in the global movement for sustainable growth.
