Maharaja Bir Bikram, born on August 19, 1908, is remembered for his role in modernising Tripura’s education system, administration, and infrastructure.
In the rest of the country, public and private sector bank branches remain open, and business is taking place as usual.
While branches in Tripura remain shut, customers can continue to perform digital transactions through net banking, mobile banking, UPI, and ATMs. However, branch-based facilities such as cheque clearance and demand draft issuance will not be available.
Upcoming bank holidays in August
According to the RBI’s holiday calendar, banks will remain closed on the following dates:
August 25 (Monday): Srimanta Sankardev Tithi – only in Guwahati
August 27 (Wednesday): Ganesh Chaturthi / Samvatsari / Ganesh Puja – holidays in cities such as Mumbai, Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad and others
August 28 (Thursday): Ganesh Chaturthi (second day) / Nuakhai – holidays in Bhubaneswar and Panaji
How RBI categorises bank holidays
The RBI divides bank holidays into three categories:
- Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act – when physical banking transactions such as cheque clearing are suspended.
- RTGS holidays – when real-time gross settlement transactions do not take place.
- Banks’ closing of accounts – days set aside for annual closing of bank books.
The holiday list published by the RBI applies differently across states and cities, depending on local festivals and events. Customers can check the RBI website for state-specific holiday notifications.
