SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The 40th Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix opening with some changes this year that organizers said are making it better than ever before.
For the first time, the three-day racing event, drawing 69-teams from as far away as the UK, is being held in mid-September as opposed to the Fourth Of July holiday as in the past. Lucy Nicandri, P1 Media Officer said it’s a boost for both competitors and visitors.
“Being off of a holiday has created an opportunity for them if they haven’t been able to come to Sarasota to race before, they now can do that which is indicated in our boat count increase this year, “ Nicandri said.
Local businesses added it’s a boost to their bottom line at what has proven in the past to be a slower time of the year.
“It’s definitely been a lot busier than recent; we were prepared for the boat races, we knew that it would be busy,” said The Toasted Café manager Andrea Whiteside.
Saturday, September 14th includes racing at Lido Beach along 400 Benjamin Drive. Sunday, September 15th, races are slated from 10am -3:30pm at Lido Beach with an awards ceremony scheduled from 5-6pm at the Van Wezel Parking Lot at 777 N. Tamiami Trail.
